The relation between obesity and cancer
There is a close relation between obesity and cancer, due to the high level of body fat and high level of insulin and growth hormones that lead to the stimulation of cells to divide further, as also die fat cells that are abundant in the body, so the body sends immune cells to remove dead cells and then the occurrence of infections that in turn divide cells and increase the risk of cancer.
Some studies have shown that obese people at a younger age are more likely to develop cancer than those who gain weight at an older age. Women who are obese in adolescence are at risk of developing cancer after menopause, because obesity leads to an increase in the number of fat cells during adolescence and then to their size after menopause, while obesity starting at a later age increases the size of fat cells and not the number of fat cells.
The most common cancers caused by obesity:
1- Bowel and esophageal cancer.
2- Pancreatic cancer.
3- Kidney cancer.
4- Liver cancer.
5- Stomach and gallbladder cancer.
6- Breast cancer (postmenopausal or menopause).
7- Thyroid cancer.
8- Leukemia.
9- Meninge cancer (a type of brain tumor).
Factors that increase the risk of cancer due to obesity:
1- Excess fat causes a change in the level of sex hormones such as testosterone and estrogen in the body, which increases the risk of cancer.
2- Insulin hormone is important for the use of dietary energy in the body, and with no control of sugars in food, insulin may affect the growth factors available to cells.
3- Accumulation of abdominal fat has harmful effects on the intestines, pancreas, kidneys and esophagus.
4- The body produces proteins and hormones that nourish and activate fat cells that spread through the circulatory system.
Although the British Cancer Research Association has confirmed that smoking remains the main cause of cancer prevention campaigns, it also stressed that obesity is second cause after smoking as a reason for increasing the cancer rate (knowing not all obese people will definitely develop cancer, but increases the risk of infection), and statistics smoking and obesity have shown that there are about :
- 13.4 million people are obese and do not smoke.
- 6.3 million adult smokers are not obese.
- 1.5 million adults are obese and smoke.
WHO Report 2018
1- The number of children under the age of five suffering from obesity was 41 million.
2- More than 340 million children and adolescents between the ages of 5 and 19 have suffered from obesity.
3- The obesity rate has increased nearly threefold in 2018 since 1975.
Therefore, parents who are obese should take care of their health and be careful to lose weight and increase physical activity as obesity can be inherited to children, so do not allow your children to be at risk of serious diseases caused by obesity.
